The question would be then, I think, just how much research did JKR do on 
the real Flamel. Did she do a cursory examination of the mythology of the 
Philosopher's Stone, and take only the names and the minimal background? Or 
did she do extensive research and base the timeline of the entire series on 
the real-life dates surrounding Flamel.
I'm more inclined to believe the former, and that the NHN 500th deathday 
date is the accurate one. It's easily explained that the almost 400 years 
line is an date that she later changed. It does happen, to the best of authors.
