I have a quote here form a JK interview (online chat) that proves Gwen right on this subject:

Does the animal one turns into as an Animagi reflect your personality?
Very well deduced, Narri! I personally would like to think that I would transform into an otter, which is my favourite animal. Imagine how horrible it would be if I turned out to be a cockroach!
(This is from a AOL Chat and Narri is the person who asked the question).

Looking at this quote it seems that you don't have any choice about what you turn into as an animagus.

In relation to this I have been wondering a couple of things:
a.. Sirius is a dog and dog's represent loyalty,
b.. Peter is a rat and is very sneaky, (being the spy etc).
c.. James is a stag which I presume is to do with bravery.

So what does a cat (McGonagall) represent? I feel that this could be a big clue to McGonagall, especially relating to the discussion from the weekend that she may be evil. I just can't see a cat as evil or sneaky etc but I can't think (remember) what cat's represent.

Does anyone know what cats are supposed to be?
