IIRC, Fantastic Beasts says that phoenixes can disappear from one place and reappear in another instantly (like Apparating, I assume).  I'm pretty sure that's what the book said, although it might have been the dodo(or it could have been both).  If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.  I refuse to have any of my HP books here with me at school, as much as it pains me, because I'd never get any studying done with them around, so I'll have to wait until Thanksgiving break to read them.  Until then, I'll just have to rely on my memory...which, IMNSHO, is pretty good when it comes to Harry Potter <g>, but certainly not perfect :)
