Hi everyone --

<when he's right, it's through sheer luck.

That's certainly true, but if we analyze why Harry is able to accomplish great things, we realize that he, too, has his fair share of luck and would already be dead without it (which in some kind of way continues the "Deus ex machina"- thread). If Dumbledore hadn't made his timely appearance in PS/SS, if the Ford Anglia hadn't rescued him and Ron from the spiders in CoS, if Fawkes hadn't brought the Sorting Hat complete with sword in CoS, if Hermione hadn't had the time turner in PoA, if his and Voldemort's wands hadn't shared cores in GoF... to cite just the most prominent examples.

Now, to have a great deal of luck doesn't mean you're worth less than somebody else and we all certainly agree on that in Harry's case. Because if you get a lucky chance and you use it in the right way, that's what finally will make you achieve your aims. That's what "being a Gryffindor" means (this only just occurred to me, I wonder what your opinions will be): To have the courage of taking your chance when it presents itself. A quality that Hufflepuffs certainly lack. Slytherins might have a tendency to force their chances and to bend destiny to their own will and Ravenclaws, well Ravenclaws might be a bit too arrogant for condescending to take a chance (yuck!), they achieve whatever they want by mere intelligence and genius (or at least they think they do)

But back to Ron: Why is he always seen as the weakest of the trio? Not because he's the least intelligent- his marks seem to be more or less like Harry's. Not because of lack of courage, either, the fact that he obviously suffers from arachnophobia doesn't make him a coward. And we have seen in various occasions that he has courage, it's not his fault that he didn't subscribe to a date with Voldemort once a year (nor did Hermione). I don't think that anybody might hold the fact that he's poor against him. So why do we make him the weakest? Did we already do so after PS/SS (chess game) and PoA (shrieking shack)-that's difficult to remember, I know, at least I couldn't say anymore? Or was it his blatant jealousy in GoF to make us think he's the weakest? I think that would be a very plausible theory, as jealousy certainly is a powerful motive for doing the most unpleasant things (Snape, Pettigrew, Draco...)OTOH, it seems that he has overcome it.

And please, please, let's not forget that the boy is only fourteen or fifteen! Wanting to hear the same compliment from Moody he made to H&H, seems only natural. Another thing we shouldn't forget is that it's *young Barty Crouch* to say what makes a good Auror. Why do we believe an ex-Death-Eater when he talks about Aurors? Nobody else ever does mention anything about necessary qualifications for that career. So maybe it would be Ron to make a dam' good Auror and not H&H?

"I say to you all, once again--in the light of Lord Voldemort's return, we are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.
"Lord Voldemort's gift for spreading discord and enmity is very great. We can fight it only by showing an equally strong bond of friendship and trust. Differences of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are identical and our hearts are open."
