Frmo SS/PS, chapter 8:
"There were a hundred and forty-two staircases at Hogwarts: wide,
sweeping ones; narrow, rickety ones; some that led somewhere
different on a Friday...."
Clearly, the staircases are not the only feature of Hogwarts that
changes. Based on the evidence provided by Cindy, Brandon, Steve and
others I think it's clear that the Great Hall has chairs on Monday,
Wednesday and Fridays, and benches on Tuesday, Thursday and
Saturdays. And, although JKR doesn't mention it, I firmly believe
that on Sundays the students sit on magically floating cushions.
Also, based on variations noticed between the books and the movie
set, it looks like the location of each House's table in the Great
Hall also changes periodically.
