Yes, I have imagined it working something like that.  Perhaps a 
cumulative buildup rather than a catalyst.

There is also the question of psychology.  Once Lupin *sees* the 
moon, his awareness of the impending transformation, and knowledge 
that it is irresistable (the moon is his boggart, after all) cause it 
to accelerate.  A bit like when you start falling ill at work, but 
don't realise it until you get home and try to relax.
