<With all the talk of Book Five, I actually find myself currently more
<curious about Book Six. Obviously, with Book Seven being the GRAND,
<EPIC CONCLUSION and with GOF having been the book that sets said
<GRAND, EPIC CONCLUSION into motion, we can expect either Five or Six
<to function as something of a respite (perhaps even both to some
<extent). You can't up the stakes every book; it's just not possible
<to maintain good pacing.

Luke, the only thing I hate about your posts is their me-too-provoking character. But you're certainly right. I've just reread GoF and at the end asked myself how JKR is going to maintain dramatic tension for three more books. I mean, Harry can have direct confrontations with Voldemort only so many times, but what are possible ways out of the dilemma?

1) Romance, which would focus the plot more on the impact Voldemort's return has on single characters than on Voldemort himself

2) Back-stories, which would tie in well with what JKR said about bringing the reader to new places (Malfoy Manor, Snape's or the Marauders' families f.ex.)

3) An entirely new thread of narration that will join the main thread in book 6 or 7

What I really hope is that there won't be any more recurring plot patterns- did anybody already underline the fact that important, plot-influencing events always take place on Halloween? (Troll in PS/SS, Petrifying of Mrs. Norris in CoS, Sirius's first attempt to get into Gryffindor tower in PoA, Harry being elected fourth participant in GoF).

<snip definition of "epic"- sorry>
<Five, I imagine, will be similarly epic, although in a different
<fashion. We will see more of the wizarding world and I suspect the
<focus will be on preparations for Seven.

Here I'd rather disagree. For the simple reason that Harry needs a break after the traumatic events he witnessed before the summer holidays. So, unless JKR returns to the now well-known scheme of "September and October- calm, Halloween- dramatic event, then slowly build up tension for showdown in june", which would be illogic, as Voldemort is back and present already at the beginning of the book, she has to make book 5 the slowdown, taking breath for 6 and 7.

<So what about Six? I find it hard to believe that it will be
<similarly "preparatory". Therefore I would expect it to be tangential
<and character-centric (i.e. backstory) like POA was. A story that
<clearly impacts the fight against Voldemort, but does not directly
<involve it. However, if this assumption is correct than I cannot for
<the life of me fathom why every question asked of JKR in interviews
<indicates that [insert any mystery here] will be answered in Five or
<Seven. Never Six. Maybe Six is the well-kept secret we are
<overlooking.

Mmh. Well, if things go as I said before, six would show the results of Voldemort carefully having built up power during five, which seems quite logical to me. We can't expect Voldemorts power to be fully restored, complete with a new set of Death Eaters, the ministry going berserk, Hogwarts in upheaval, by the beginning of book five. That's why my option for five was as said above, and six showing the full extent of what has been prepared in five.

<Or perhaps I am dead wrong

Yep, but that's the fun about guessing, isn't it?

Susanna/pigwidgeon37, who finds office work much duller than speculating about HP 5, 6 and 7 (now who'd have guessed?"

"I say to you all, once again--in the light of Lord Voldemort's return, we are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.
"Lord Voldemort's gift for spreading discord and enmity is very great. We can fight it only by showing an equally strong bond of friendship and trust. Differences of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are identical and our hearts are open."
