Another question is why Draco was in the woods in GoF? Was the 
torture of the Muggle family too much for him and he ran away from 
what was happening?

Voldemort clearly shows us that L. Malfoy's raison d'etre is against 
Muggles being accepted into Wizarding world, which is why he hates the 
Weasleys. As on both sides (good vs. bad) there are shades of gray as 
to how "good" or "bad" a person is.
