Question about Book Four

Hello--

I was wondering if someone could explain something that doesn' make any sense 
to me. In the beginning of Book Four it says that all three Riddles are found dead, 
including the teenage son, Tom, i.e. Voldemort. I still can't fingure out how this 
can be the case. Did he stage his own death? Where is this ever explained?
