What's not to like?  In terms of characterization, Sirius has it all:

1.  Smart:  One of the cleverest at Hogwarts.
2.  Sympathetic:  Spent a dozen years locked up for something he 
didn't do.
3.  Suffering untold guilt:  He pays every day for making Peter the 
Secret Keeper, which cost his best friend his life.
4.  Honorable:  after his escape, he risks everything to make sure 
Harry is not endangered.
5.  Understanding:  Genuine attempts to fulfill the role of father 
figure for Harry.
6.  Strong:  Able to survive Azkaban and escape.
7.  Theatrical:  He knows how to make an exit (see quote below).

For me, these inner personality traits more than compensate for 
Sirius' rather scruffy personal appearance.
