I went back and looked at the chapter again, and the re-write makes 
sense to me.  Harry was thinking about his mom that night.  Twice, 
Harry's mom comes up.  Voldemort says Harry's mom is not there to die 
for him".  During the duel, Harry thinks again about how his mom 
isn't there to die for him.  So the re-write works in this respect.  
JKR got a little lucky there, IMHO.
