She said it an interview or online chat. I think her publishers
believed a male-sounding author would sell better, and insisted on
initials. She only has one, J, so she had to make up another. It
seems to me to be typical of her that instead of just choosing a
letter of the alphabet, she went for the full grandmother backstory.
(Compare James Murray, editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, who
called himself J.A.H. Murray, the A H not standing for anything)
I saw the book in Waterstones, BTW.
