Voldemort and Crouch Jr.

At the beginning of GoF, Voldemort mentions that his loyal servant 
would soon be returning to him.  I thought I remembered at the end of 
GoF, Crouch Jr. saying that Voldemort realized that Crouch was still 
alive after the Quidditch World Cup.

I'm confused.  The timing seems off there.
