Potions, Yuck?

I am quite repulsed by the list of ingredients that go into the various
potions Snape brews with his students. Are these things actually DRUNK by
the students or are they applied topically to surfaces of whatever needs
to be affected? Can you imagine downing something containing dragon
liver, bat spleen, rat brain, crocodile heart, leech juice, boomslang
skin, powdered beetles, and mashed caterpillars??? EEEE YEWWWW!!!
