Well, he has to have one, doesn't he? To explain his conversion from
Death Eater to Dumbldore's confidant?

May I suggest...

That he is a widower; his beloved wife was killed by HWMNBN'd or his
henchmen, or that he is still married, but his beloved wife now
languishes in St. Mungo's hospital, unable to recognize him, just as
the Longbottoms are unable to recognize Neville.

I confess, I read an interview with the producer of the HP movie, who
said that there was something he wanted to do in the movie, but JKR
said he couldn't do it, for reasons that would become clear in a
later book.

Following the recent tragedy, there were several references in the
press to a remark reputedly made by Admiral Yamamoto following Pearl
Harbor: that he feared he had awakened and enraged a sleeping
giant. I couldn't help being reminded of Hogwart's motto: Draco
Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus, "Never tickle a sleeping dragon", and
the early American revolutionary battle flag, with the words "don't
tread on me" and an image of a rattlesnake.
