I agree that Hogwarts years seem to number forty or so, but JKR said in an
interview that Hogwarts has about 1,000 students. Since we take her word as
law, this threw a spanner in the works, since some of us (not all) had
pretty much settled on about 300 students.

I'm showing my age. Perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned streaming at all,
but it is usually the organisation of students by ability level -
controversial, as you say.

Good point... and L.O.O.N. is the League Of Obsessed Nitpickers, a group of
members of this list who are offered membership on the evidence of their
posts on topics such as the number of prefects at Hogwarts.
