Actually, what makes that suggestion absurd (or another reason it
does so) is that it reduces a very complex relationship to the
merely economic level . . . which is a =reductio ad absurdum= if
I ever heard one.
The real issue with the house-elves isn't wages at all, but
freedom of choice, and I think once Hermione realizes this, her
house-elf liberation movement will be on much firmer ground.
Hermione needs to exercise her personal strengths and =research=
the problem. Not only does she have the house-elves themselves
to talk to, there must be documentation on their history and how
they've interacted with the wizarding world in the past.
C'mon, Hermione, hit the books. You know how . . . ;)
