   Actually he is present at the Christmas luncheon in
PoA. He is wearing a dress coat and Harry et al seem
mildly surprised at seeing him there suggesting both
that he does not usually dine in the Hall and that
this is by choice, (as with Professor Trelawney).

   At this point the entire student body of Hogwarts
must have a *very* jaundiced view of DADA instructors!

I think it is that and Lupin's evident ill-health that
causes many students to have doubts about him at
first.

    Or just learn to sew the normal way, or ask one of
the House elves to do it for him. I suspect Lupin's
tattered appearance is as much due to indifference as
poverty. What he needs is a nice Witch who's good at
potions and doesnt' mind a spot of lycanthropy to take
care of him. ;)
