Hermione's priorities/wizarding genetics

Catherine:  I think that Hermione's priorities would probably be 
doing homework, and saving the world.

Rowena G-Ff.:  Have you read the Deryni Chronicles?  Katherine 
Kurtz's genetics postulated a dominant which gave the half-blooded 
Deryni abilities.  If the individual came from a "Pure" human 
bloodline, the abilities were suppressed, or else the Church had a 
lovely warm fire waiting...Perhaps the Wizarding gene lies dormant in 
many a Muggle family, suppressed either because of the reason given 
above, or, later, through sheer disbelief in magic.  I offer this as 
an explanation of how two dentists produced a witch.  They would have 
found out about Hermione's abilities via the letter from Hogwarts, 
which would magically know to whom it must go.
