I didn't. I've always had more male friends than
female friends, so it doesn't surprise that Hermione
does, too.

It may be significant that Hermione is the character I
resembled most as a teenager, although I was far more
shy and didn't bounce up and down, trying to get
called on. Because of my unusual interests--SF/fantasy
books, RPGs, the usual geek egghead pursuits--I
couldn't relate to most girls in jr high/high school.
They were interested in boys (who wouldn't give me a
second glance), fashion, make-up and hair,
cheerleading, etc.

Because of her intelligence, I can see Hermione not
relating well to other girls of her age either; Harry
and Ron may not be on her level of intelligence, but
they're the first people she took up with upon arrival
at Hogwarts, and time and circumstances have created
strong bond between them.

I think that underneath her academic shell, she's got
the heart of an adventuress, otherwise, she would have
run screaming from all the problems and exploits that
pop up around Harry; instead, she's gotten more and
more involved, and more and more daring in what she's
willing to chance herself, even if it means risking
the worst possible fate-worse-than-death: expulsion.
*That's* why she got put into Gryffindor, not
Ravenclaw, IMO.

Hermione isn't a "typical" teenager in a lot of ways,
and if the only female companionship available
consists of girls who are more typical, less like
Hermione, I can easily see her not forming any close
female attachments at that age. I didn't find a female
best friend until I was in college, and she's as big a
geek egghead as I am.

I believe whole-heartedly that there are specific
reasons why Our Severus is so bitter and angry. I
don't think he was just born a jerk; events and
experiences shaped him, and I've speculated that
unrequited love may very well be a significant factor
in the mix.
