For the same reason that I have 4th year French students who *still* can't pronounce a 1st year phrase: "Je veux" (which means "I want").  They've heard it and repeated it thousands of times, but left to their own devices, they still don't say it right.  These are kids who are quite intellingent, they just have difficulty pronouncing certain French words.  Imagine the even more difficult task of getting your Bulgarian mouth to pronounce old English names!
