Be warned, fair reader, that I can't think of a way of expressing
this without being a little, well, off-colour. Nonetheless, I'm being
serious.

I propose a tongue-in-cheek theory that Percy is named after King
Richard - or, rather, any of the King Richards. Now much as William,
Charles and Frederick are known by colloquial forms (Bill, Charlie
and Fred), in the same way, Richard would be known as Dick. As it
happens, this is a common nickname for the penis. A rather less
vulgar and more childish alternative is "Percy". Now I would have
estimated the chance of JKR using an obscure genital nomenclature gag
as extremely low, until we found out in GoF that she's well prepared
to put an explicit "Uranus" reference in the text just for laughs!
I am well over 99% sure that I'm seeing things where they shouldn't
be seen and need to get my mind out of the gutter, but it's just
possible that it might be correct and original... and, yes, Dr.
Freud, I will step into your nice room for my next appointment :-)
Best wishes,
Chris
(who only wishes he had thought of this a day or two earlier, when it
would have sounded so much more convincing at the time)
