Or perhaps it is a religious reference ie) the Virgin Mary mother of 
Jesus Christ.  I know it doesnt really fit into the royalty theme, 
but it's another possibility.  Perhaps it has many layered meaning, 
referring to a particular skill/talent/attribute of one or more of 
her children aswell as her own significance as a character.  The 
origins of the name Mary lie in hebrew meaning "bitterness" (yes I 
know, I was very disappointed when I discovered this!!!)Although I 
found that information in a book for naming children so I'm not 100% 
sure of its authenticity.
