I don't think I'm alone in thinking that Arithmancy is, in JKR's world, just
the magic of numbers, and not, as in our own world, divination by way of
numerology. If that were the case, then I'd think that Hermione was being
not just foolish, but downright ignorant, when she called Divination 'wooly'
but still talked up Arithmancy.
I think JKR just liked that it sounded like 'arithmatic' and that it would,
therefore, be a plausible subject in a wizarding school. If Arithmancy turns
out to be numerology, I'll be sorely upset.
