Sirius was not in the best physical shape after 12 years in Azkaban
and a year on the run, so it's likely Padfoot was weaker than his
normal self too.  And James wasn't there -- perhaps Padfoot and Prongs
together could've kept the wolf under control without damage to
anyone.
