Is Sirius named after anyone at all? Severus and Remus come from the
classical era, but Sirius (Greek for "burning") is the dog star (it's
the brightest star of Canis Major). I like to imagine that in
Sirius's family, all the kids were named after stars: Rigel, Deneb,
Sirius, etc.
So I don't know if Sirius's name indicates political leanings so much
as one or both parents' astrological hobby.
And while doing a bit of research, I found this:
http://www.spiritweb.org/Spirit/sirius-star.html
"Sirius is also associated with liberation, in fact, according to
ancient teachings, the very concept of freedom itself resides in human
consciousness because of the influence of this star system.
Interestingly enough, the day our Sun conjuncts Sirius at 14 degrees
Cancer, is July 4th, America's Independence Day!"
The ancients refer to Sirius as a "ruddy" colored star, leading some
scientists to wonder if Sirius used to look red, which is why Sirius
was also called "bloody." Bloody Sirius. Dog Sirius. Freedom Sirius.
That can't be a coincidence, can it, Jo?
