I'm hoping this post doesn't get rejected for being so short, but I
was running those genealogy searches on various names from
the Potter series (obviously, names like Dumbledore, Snape
and Weasley make the search engine go haywire). And of
course, I got very simple answers for Granger and Potter. But
the definition I got for Black was extraordinarily interesting:
2) derived from Old English blac meaning 'white or pale'; thus
the surname curiously, may have originally designated either a
light or a dark person-black or white
A person who may be either black or white? In other words, you
think they're "dark" but they turn out to be on the "light" side?
Hmm, sound like anyone we know...
If JKR really saw that when she came up with his name, that is
just plain ol' genius. Really, really clever, kinda like NAGINI'S
BANE (I still can't get over how clever that one was)
