Decided now that we're talking grins and tears, I'd toss in my two
cents on all of it.
Favorite part:
My favorite part in all of the books so far is the shrieking shack in
general, and in particular this bit:
------------------------
<<<<"I thought you'd come and help your friend," he said hoarsely.
His voice sounded as though he had long since lost the habit of using
it. "Your father would have done the same for me. Brave of you) not to
run for a teacher. I'm grateful... it will make everything much
easier...."
The taunt about his father rang in Harry's ears as though Black had
bellowed it. A boiling hate erupted in Harry's chest, leaving no place
for fear. For the first time in his life, he wanted his wand back in
his hand, not to defend himself, but to attack... to kill. Without
knowing what he was doing, he started forward, but there was a sudden
movement on either side of him and two pairs of hands grabbed him and
held him back.... "No, Harry!" Hermione gasped in a petrified
whisper; Ron, however, spoke to Black.
"If you want to kill Harry, you'll have to kill us too!" he said
fiercely, though the effort of standing upright was draining him of
still more color, and he swayed slightly as he spoke.
Something flickered in Black's shadowed eyes. "Lie down," he said
quietly to Ron. "You will damage that leg even more."
"Did you hear me?" Ron said weakly, though he was clinging painfully
to Harry to stay upright. "You'll have to kill all three of us!">>>>
--------------------------------------
It's just such a fantastic trio moment. Plus, it gives me something
to ponder. I have to wonder about the flickering in Black's eyes.
That interests me at least as much as Dumbledore's gleam of triumph.
What does the flicker mean? At first I sort of felt like it was a
flicker of recogniton of a kindred spirit - someone else who would
not hesitate to die for his friends, and for Harry in particular, but
if that's what it was, then his response, first <<<<"Lie down," he
said quietly to Ron. "You will damage that leg even more.">>>> and
then <<<<"There'll be only one murder here tonight," said Brack, and
his grin widened.>>>> doesn't seem to follow from it. The lie down
bit, maybe, is an attempt at kindness, but it doesn't seem much like
it since he then goes about grinning frighteningly about murder with
no explanation.
So anybody else got any ideas about the flicker?
Grins:
As for the grins, my favorite bit is when the map taunts Snape. I
was in a waiting room when I read that and I couldn't stop myself
laughing - I tried, but I was sitting there in a crowd of strangers
chuckling to myself. I finally had to explain to the person sitting
next to me.
Tears:
And for tears, I admit I've cried several times, but the worst was
when Harry was lying face-down on the quidditch pitch, refusing to
let go of poor dead Cedric's arm. His grief was just so tangible - I
felt it in my throat.
Great, now I'm all choked up again. Drat.
