Maybe the owl was just out looking for supper? Owls DO like to eat mice 
and, in fact, need to feed on bones and other discusting bits so they 
can form balls with the inedible bits (I'm sorry, I don't know the 
English name for those balls, but I DO know that they are an indicaion 
of the owl's health). I don't entirely agree with the feeding habits of 
Harry's Hedwig, which only seems to go out to hunt when they're on 
Privet Drive, but I just imagine that those are the uninteresting 
parragraphs JKR cuts when she finds out she's witten a 3000-page book 
and she realises she has to cut it down somewhat.
