Of the beasts in "Fantastic Beasts" I think a runespoor would make a
great pet for Harry. (It is a three headed serpent that was, in the
past, a favored pet of Parseltongues. The three heads are all
intellegent, and talk to one another.)

I do agree however, that it seems very likely that Fawkes has picked
Harry as his next owner, after Dumbledore. Fawkes has twice now
been impressed enough to heal Harry's wounds, and that is quite
something. (Dumbledore was impressed!)

This raises the question- Is Dumbledore going to die?
Traditionally, there has only ever been one, Pheonix at a time. The
bird renews itself from its own ashes, but in traditional Mythology,
there was only one (It was considered the "King" of the birds by the
writers of medieval bestiaries, just as the lion was the king of the
animals, and the Dragon or Basilisk is the King of the Serpents.)

It appears that in the HP-verse, there are other Pheonixes. It is
stated that Hand V share wand cores from the <same> pheonix, whic
himplies to me that there are other Pheonixes. Fantastic Beasts
states that they "Nest on Mountaintops" This doesn't necessarily
mean they are nesting to breed, but may indicate that possibility.

Still, if The big D dies, I think Harry is the one to whom Fawkes
will turn.
