When I think about the sorting hat and what its role is I have to
think about what what goes into making the school what it is. There
are pehaps 200 children there at one time. The children need to be
split up among 4 houses, put where they will belong the best.
Lets asume 28 new kids were starting school, and all 28 students
would fit perfectly into Gryfindor. The hat would not put them all
there. Its job is to sort them into 4 houses first. People who know
where the want to go and fit the profile take very little effort.
Where as people who dont know where they want to be, and dont
imidiatly fit one profile take longer. Think of Hermonie, she fits
the Raven Claw Ideal more than the Gryfindor. Try balancing out her
traits she should not have been in Gryfindor. She was put where she
best fit and there was room.
People like Neville who shows few signs of Gryfindor trates may
simply be the ones left over who were closest to the ideal and needed
to fill the spot, even though he was more like a hufflepuf.
This would explain why in the middle of Voldemorts riegn Peter was
put into Gryfindor, Slytherin was out of room.
And as to Harry being considered for Slytherin, the sorting hat was
just having fun. Teasing Harry about Slytherin just because he didnt
want to go there had to be immense fun for a hat that would be
sitting on a shelf for another year.
Enough rambling, after reading everyones thoughts i felt I should
share mine.
