of the wand were echoes of spells, and they eventually faded;
Voldemort didn't fade, he simply existed in a less-than-corporeal
state until he had gained enough strength from possessing other
creatures (like snakes and small rodents and Quirrell) and drinking
unicorn blood and snake venom to take on that ugly-baby-form Harry
saw.

Sorry for the delay in responding to this, but I've been sick with
the flu. I actually was thinking of this in my feverish state and I
realized that I have never felt that Voldemort was able to create a
babyish form by mere magical means and elixirs. I don't think that
combination would create flesh enough to hold a wand and torture
Pettigrew. Nope. I think he had Pettigrew abduct a living
breathing human baby for him to possess.
I don't think Pettigrew used magic to obtain the child because it
would have shown up in the famous duel with Harry when the wand gave
up its history. No, I think that Wormtail did this the old
fashioned way. He snatched the child while a parent wasn't
looking. It would have been within Wormtail's skill level to simply
watch a mother at a playground with more than one child. When the
mother was distracted by her elder children, then Wormtail would
sneak up in his rat form to the carriage where the sleeping baby
was - transform and slowly carry the sleeping child away. I would
also assume that it would be *far easier* for him to do this with a
Muggle child than a magical one. Any magical parent should attempt
to put a charm on their children to protect them from those who
would abuse their child. (Wouldn't that come in handy folks?)
So I think that Voldy's spirit was possessing a living baby, but
that due to a steady diet of snake venom and unicorn blood he didn't
grow like a normal child would. It would stunt his growth.
Therefore he still needed to have the magical spell at the end of
GoF. This would add to his already jinxed jumble of magical curses
to his body.
1)the bone of the father he murdered
2)the flesh of his servant who has a life debt to Harry Potter
3)the blood of Harry Potter who is good and pure of heart
4)the curse of using unicorn blood
5)the body of an innocent Muggle child.
Voldemort is cursed alright. And should all the magic from him
vanish, what would be left is Muggle. Harry wouldn't need to kill
him then because it would be the soul of the abducted child.
BTW, here's a nasty thing to picture in one's mind: Pettigrew
having to change Voldemort's dirty diapers. EWWWWWWWW.
