Ooooh! The non-Snape fan in me is trembling all over at the idea that
dear Severus might be not only be Ever-So-Evil, but also might harbor
ambitions of being Supremely Evil And Ruling The World. That is Ever
So Bangy! I especially like this idea because JKR doesn't seem to
have a great deal of affection for Snape, so she might well sacrifice
him if she could spring another good surprise ending on all of her
fans.

Well, all of them except Caroline, Eloise and myself. We'll be ready
for her, won't we?

Well, I certainly like this part of the theory. ;-)

Oh, it very well might be. There are just a whole lot of question
marks surrounding Snape. For instance:

1. There are many instances in which Snape is overly protective of
Harry. Not wishing Harry to go to Hogsmeade. Being angry when
Harry's name came out of the Goblet. Saving Harry from falling off
of his broom. JKR wants us to believe that these are the actions of
a benevolent father figure. They might instead be the actions of a
cunning Evil-Overlord-In-Waiting.

2. Snape seems intent on rubbing out the wizards who could stand in
the way when the day finally comes that Harry defeats Voldemort and
Snape defeats Harry. Snape tried to get Sirius killed, colluding
with Evil Fudge to do so. Snape also inexplicably tried to get Lupin
killed. Had Snape succeeded, there would have been two fewer wizards
standing between Snape and Harry. When Snape couldn't get Lupin's
soul sucked out, he settled for at least making sure that Lupin
wasn't around Hogwarts to get in the way. I say Arabella Figg had
better watch her back around Snape.

3. Snape let the dementor suck out Crouch Jr.'s soul and, depending
on how you read the text, Snape let the dementor into the castle
against Dumbledore's express orders. Why? Snape can't let Crouch
Jr. finger Snape as Ever-So-Evil, can he?

4. Snape apparated to the graveyard at the end of GoF. This is why
Snape tenses when Harry is naming names.

5. Snape was somehow able to return to Voldemort at the end of GoF,
yet show up at the leaving feast without so much as a slimy hair out
of place. Why? Voldemort knows Snape is really an Evil Double Agent
who has tricked gullible Albus Dumbledore into believing Snape is
Dumbledore's spy.

6. Snape is Neville's worst fear – this is because Neville learned
something important about Snape connected to the torture of the
Longbottoms.

7. Snape asks us to believe that he had no idea Pettigrew was a DE,
even though Snape was supposed to be spying. I say Snape knew
exactly what Pettigrew was up to. Snape also knew full well that
Pettigrew was alive in the Shrieking Shack. That's why Snape wasn't
willing to listen to Black and Lupin – why listen when there are two
wizards who need to be relieved of their souls ASAP?

8. Snape arrived at Hogwarts knowing more Dark curses than half the
seventh year students. That's because Snape does his homework. If
Snape is preparing himself to rule the world, he wants to do the job
right.

In fact, what proof is there that Snape is really, really working for
the forces of good? All of the evidence could go either way -- just
like Severus Snape himself.

Caroline:

>canon that rules this out?

Oh, sure, maybe I can join with you there. We need an acronym -- a
really long, impossible-to-remember acronym.

I might even have to make a play for Ever So Evil Moody as well.
That gives us a wicked, Bangy scene in Book 7 in which Evil Moody is
about to finish Harry, and Snape saves Harry (just like in GoF).
Moody and Snape have a confrontation (just like GoF), where we learn
they both are Evil Overlords-In-Waiting. As everone knows, the world
is only big enough for one Evil Overlord. Snape finishes off Moody
and prepares to kill Harry himself. And then . . . then . . .

Well, you don't want me to spoil the surprise, do you? ;-)

Cindy
