Well, for starters, creating acronyms is hard work, take it from me 
(unless you're called Tabouli, that is). 

Then again, Hermione was just too impulsive, and she was thinking of 
higher ideals than the more prosaic side of any sort of campaign: 
publicity, mottos, mass appeal, etc. (you know, all those things 
politicians waste -sorry, "invest"- millions on). Hermione expected 
people to hear that "elves must be liberated" and be inmediately 
convinced of it, just as she was. It's a common syndrom of intelligent, 
optimistic people (I am fairly intelligent, even if I do say so myself, 
but being hopelessly pesimistic, I would never have even *started* the 
campaign).

Another point of view is that it's just a form of comic relief, but it 
was far too serious for that.

On the other hand, I vaguely recall that JKR is a fan of some sort of 
American revolutionary woman called... Jessica? If someone knows about 
it, maybe he/she could investigate the first steps of that woman, to 
see if they relate to the SPEW campaign.
