No, not sexist, nor embarrassed.  Lily is a Potter by marriage only, so she 
needn't have died, except for her understandable, maternal, loving desire to 
save Harry.  Harry is a Potter by descent (unlike Liily) and it is very 
clearly stated in PoA that Voldemort was out to kill "the last of the 
Potters."
I won't quote Grey Wolf, but you all know what I mean...
