I had a thought: what if Lupin is named after his father who was a 
professor (ooh! or he has the same initials as his mom and *she* was 
a professor!)? Might that explain the worn hand-me-down look of his 
briefcase? We know nothing about his parents, and you'd think it 
might have been mentioned by Dumbledore or another long-standing 
member of the Hogwarts staff if Lupin was a second-generation 
Hogwarts professor, but it is a possibility nonetheless. 

Just a random thought. Grasping at straws, really.
