Of course it was short-sighted, we're talking about Sirius here.  He 
doesn't go in much for careful long-range planning at the best of 
times.  And here he's just had the biggest shock of his life, and is 
all grief-stricken and overwhelmed.  He wasn't thinking about the 
logistics of going after Peter, or the responsibilites of single 
parenthood, or anything else beyond the fact that James and Lily 
were dead and he had promised to take care of their child. He was 
following his impulses, as Sirius is wont to do.
