Though I am hard pressed to believe that Voldemort could feel remorse, let's
assume for a moment that there is just a teeny tiny bit of human left in him
and he did feel a flashing moment of guilt. So, he becomes so angry at
himself that he felt this guilt that he immediately AK's Lily, even though
he had every intention of sparing her. Now, if we make another assumption
that Lily's death in the film is approved by JKR. She has time to scream
out as the spell hits her. It takes a few seconds before she dies, rather
than an instant death as usually seen in AK's. Now, stay with me here.
Suppose that extra time it takes for Lily to die is a result of Voldemort's
hypothetical moment of guilt. Perhaps to perform an AK to perfection you
must have absolute hatred toward the individual and not a trace of guilt or
remorse. Because of his moment's hesitation Lily is slower to die, and then
it builds from there and Harry doesn't die at all. Instead it bounces and
so much for Voldemort.

Yes, I know, that paragraph has an awful lot of assumptions. But until Book
5 comes out I've nothing better to do than make assumptions. :)
