Do you really think so? I always thought when Dumbledore said, 
"Unless you are suggesting that Harry and Hermione are able to 
be in two places at once, I'm afraid I don't see any point in 
troubling them further," he was telling Snape, "They used 
the time turner to help Sirius escape, they had my approval, and 
unless you're prepared to get me thrown out of Hogwarts along 
with them, you had better shut up now." Which Snape does. 

The students didn't know about the Time Turner, but there's no 
reason to assume the teachers didn't. McGonagall did, for sure.
