We did have this discussion just recently.  Search the archives for the 
details.  True, they did not have sinks and indoor plumbing 1000 years ago.  
I think we came to the consensus that the Chamber entrance magically adapts 
itself to whatever is built over it.  That way Slytherin ensured the entrance 
can never be blocked.
