Isn't it great that we don't get so many details on our first and even
second or third read? ;-) The first time I read PoA, I didn't get the
whole time travel thing until Hermione revealed it, and I certainly
didn't make the connection between Sirius -> Dog Star and the great
black dog. In hindsight I'd say Sirius had the word "Animagus" written
in shining letters on his forehead, but I'm hopeless at solving
mysteries.

It seems to be a printing error that has never been corrected in the
American editions of PoA. In my Bloomsbury paperback it says "12
years", I don't know about the British hardcover, but the German
translation which follows the British editions also says "12 years"
(if I remember well, don't have them at hand to check).
