They'd just been through a horrible, horrible experience. Their 
youngest child was possessed by the most evil dark wizard in a 
hundred years,  and none of them, none of them realized what 
was happening. Imagine the guilt. The prize money must have 
seemed like a blessing from heaven. I'm sure they felt a huge 
desire to get away,  bond again as a family, escape being 
questioned by well-meaning friends, etc.
