My comments:
I think I can make sense of the idea that he loves his mother and
at the same time doesn't really understand love. He idealizes
her; he has made her into this saintly martyr in his head. The
poor innocent sweet perfect witch who was dumped by an icky
nasty Muggle and died bearing him. It's very easy to idealize,
and to feel an almost religious devotion toward, someone you
never truly know deeply. He has her on a pedestal, but doesn't
really understand how to love and care about an ordinary, flawed
human being, year in and year out, through thick and thin, etc.
