Now me:

In Chapter 1 of PS/SS, Uncle Vernon thinks to himself "Come to think 
of it, he wasn't even sure his nephew *was* called Harry...It might 
have been Harvey.  Or Harold."  So canon supports the position that 
Harry and Harold are distinctly different names.
