Actually, when Sirius and Lupin are explaining MWP&P, Lupin says:
"It took them the better part of three years to work out how to do it. Your
father and Sirius were the cleverest students in the schooll, and lucky they
were, because the Anamagus transformation can go horribly wrong- one reason
the Ministry keeps a close watch on those attempting to do it. Peter neded
all the help he could get from James and Sirius. Finally, in our fifth year,

So, they probably worked as diligently as HHR do when they are learning
difficult spells-- especially in the restricted section of the library...
Actually, I would be suprised if Harry if not R and H as well, learn the
transformation--- keeping with tradition. ;)
