Hmm.  What I got out of that scene in the Shrieking Shack was a sense of "Good 
Cop/Bad Cop" with Lupin in the role of the "Good Cop".  Specifically, it struck 
me as possible that some of the behavior was done solely for the purpose of 
eliciting a confession from Wormtail.
