Because they made a map for themselves just to see if they could. 
(And they told Harry about 'collapsed corridors'- Marauder's Map 
wasn't updated to cover that - unless the twins were lying/mistaken) -
 So they may have an updated Map they made themselves... Could the 
twins have figured out about Moony, Prongs, Padfoot and Wormtail? As 
to who they were, and about Ron's rat? (No one would listen to them, 
of course...)
