Right, that sums up Sirius. No possiblity for change or attempts to
try to fulfill that godfather role. Once you've seen him in PoA,
you've seen the complete picture.
He could have offered Harry advice when Harry asked for it, and come
back to England to try to be as close as possible to Harry, at great
personal risk, but no, ole Sirius preferred to stay on a beach
playing with toucans and drinking mai tais.
He could have been the only person Harry trusted enough to pour out
his fears about the First Task and his frustration with the rift with
Ron, but Sirius was too busy looking for his lost motorbike.
He could have been there after the Third Task to offer what comfort
he could, but, I forget, was he in the Leaky Cauldron picking up
chicks?
Nope, you're right, looks to me like Sirius is completely
irredeemable.
