But Hermione's intelligence comes through in more than just her
academic work. She is, for example, the only person who recognized
Lupin's boggart as the moon, and put it together with the other clues
to figure out that he's a werewolf. She's the one who figured out the
basilisk in CoS, too. Yes, that required looking things up in books,
but before that she had to put enough clues together to know where to
look. As for her diligence in studying, I think it's more a sign of
her perfectionism than inability to get great marks without studying.
Sure, she could coast and settle for a 97 on that Transfiguration
exam, but no, she's gotta get it *all* right, including the extra
credit.
