Heh...although his career at Hogwarts was admittedly brilliant.  How *did* the guy who opened the CoS, created a diary-shadow of himself in case of an emergency (you have to admit, it's a creative Plan B), AND effectively frame Hagrid for the petrifactions - all under Dumbledore's nose - turn into the guy who can't kill a pre-teenage boy, after having tied him to a gravestone and surrounded him with DE's?  My guess?  All those experimental spells for immorality addled his brains.  *shakes head* And I bet he's still thinking the green skin was the worst of the side effects.  Poor old Voldie.  I wonder if he could get off on a not guilty by reason of insanity plea.
